Barbera d'Asti Ciapin, Andrea Scovero, Piemont – Uncomplicated drinkability and pure fruit joy

It doesn't always have to be a heavy, festive wine: the Barbera d'Asti Ciapin from Andrea Scovero is the liquid definition of uncomplicated, honest natural wine enjoyment from Piedmont. On his small 6-hectare family estate in Monferrato, within the province of Asti, Andrea Scovero proves that artisanal winemaking without additives can also be incredibly fun and accessible. The Ciapin—which translates in the local dialect to something like "little footprint" or "step"—is Scovero's tribute to the lighthearted side of the region: a juicy, energetic red wine that gets straight to the point without any detours.

The Barbera grape: Fruit-forward and full of vitality

The Barbera grape variety is well-known for its deep dark color and its lively, animating acidity. In the Ciapin, Scovero captures these qualities in their purest, most youthful form. While the variety is often aged in oak across the region to add weight, the Barbera grape is allowed to be entirely itself here: a crisp, extremely juicy berry fruit takes center stage, carried by a freshness that makes this wine the perfect everyday companion.

Juicy and unmasked: The character of Barbera Ciapin

In the cellar, Andrea Scovero lets nature take the lead. The grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts, and matured entirely in stainless steel tanks and cement, completely untouched by the influence of masking wood. Bottled unfiltered and unrefined, this Barbera leaves exactly that name-giving light and carefree impression in the glass.

  • On the Nose: A wonderfully clear, fruit-forward bouquet that instantly whets the appetite. It smells intensely of freshly picked sour cherries, ripe raspberries, and red currants, beautifully underpinned by a subtle, floral note of violets and a hint of white pepper.

  • On the Palate: Extremely juicy, light-footed, and with a magnificent drinkability. The striking acidity of the Barbera grape dances perfectly with the crisp red fruit. The tannins are velvety soft and barely noticeable, giving the wine a wonderful lightness without losing its sense of structure.

  • The Finish: Refreshing, clean, and highlighted by an animating fruit acidity that cleanses the palate and immediately leaves you wanting the next glass.
