In eastern Georgia, in the legendary Alazani Valley at the foot of the majestic Caucasus Mountains, lies the region of Kakheti. Here, in the historic Akhmeta micro-zone, the Akhmeta Wine House practices viticulture in its most ancestral and purest form. With a history spanning over 8,000 years, Georgia is widely recognized as the cradle of global winemaking. Akhmeta brings this ancient tradition back to life on a tiny, organically farmed estate of just about 5 hectares.
The terroir in Akhmeta is truly unique: the vineyards benefit from cool mountain breezes descending from the Caucasus, which preserve a remarkable freshness and vibrant acidity in the grapes, while the hot summer days ensure perfect physiological ripeness. The soils consist of alluvial sediments, calcareous clay, and slate. This rich mineral composition gives the wines an earthy complexity and a captivating, textured mouthfeel.
The team behind Akhmeta does not see themselves as inventors, but as guardians of an ancient cultural heritage. Out of this deep reverence, the estate is strictly certified organic and incorporates biodynamic principles. Synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and herbicides are absolutely banned from the vineyards. To protect the delicate soil and promote biodiversity, the vast majority of the work is done by hand. Every grape is selectively hand-harvested in autumn—only the healthiest berries are deemed worthy of the traditional clay vessels.
In the wine cellar (known as a "Marani"), Akhmeta follows the traditional Georgian method, which has been designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. There are no modern stainless steel tanks or temperature-controlled bariques here—only large clay vessels (Qvevris) buried deep in the ground:
💡 Natural Wine in Its Purest State: Akhmeta's wines are living, breathing organisms. They evolve in your glass with every passing minute, showing a fascinating depth that modern industrial winemaking could never replicate.
Akhmeta works exclusively with indigenous Georgian grape varieties that are virtually unknown in Western Europe, yet represent some of the most exciting discoveries in the wine world today:
Because Akhmeta is an extremely small family-run estate and the traditional Qvevri method yields very small quantities, their annual bottle production is highly limited. These wines are sought-after gems in the global natural wine scene. At oneder.wine, we are proud to bring these fascinating, primordial wines directly to your table. Perfect for anyone who wants to taste wine history in its most authentic form.
