Maria Pia Castelli is a well-regarded winery located in Monte Urano, in Italy's Marche region. The winery thrives on an exceptional terroir, characterized by clay soils rich in minerals such as iron and magnesium. Spanning 8 hectares of owned land, Maria Pia Castelli ensures complete control over their vineyard environment, a crucial factor in their high-quality wine production.
The winery is committed to artisanal craftsmanship, with every stage of wine production carefully performed by hand. This manual approach guarantees careful handling of the grapes and wine, preserving their inherent quality and character. Additionally, the wines undergo aging in French oak barrels (barriques), which are regularly exchanged to impart complexity and depth.
Combining biodynamic practices, meticulous manual labor, and the use of premium French oak barrels, Maria Pia Castelli produces distinctive, high-quality wines that embody the terroir and traditional winemaking techniques of the Marche region.
The history of the Maria Pia Castelli winery began in 1992. Early in their marriage, Maria Pia and her husband Enrico journeyed through Bourgogne, tasting and purchasing fine French wines, which sparked their dream of planting a vineyard at home.
Inspired by the Piedmont landscapes, they returned with a vision, despite their lack of winemaking knowledge. Maria Pia's father, Erasmo, an experienced farmer and winemaker, encouraged them. In 1998, they planted 4 hectares of Montepulciano and Sangiovese, expanding with another 4 hectares of Montepulciano and white grapes the next year.
Erasmo initially focused on selling grapes to large wineries, but memories of Bourgogne pushed Maria Pia and Enrico to pursue their dream. The turning point came in 2000 when they met Marco Casolanetti, an innovative producer who became a collaborator. They built a small cellar and began experimenting with winemaking.
Their first wine was ready in 2001, earning praise from Erasmo. Full production began in 2002, but challenges arose, including a hailstorm that damaged their Sangiovese grapes. Despite these setbacks, they persevered, inspired by Erasmo’s resilience.
Erasmo passed away in early 2003, but Maria Pia and Enrico continued their dream with determination, turning their passion into a thriving winery.
As a traditional family-owned cantina, the whole family participates in important stages of the harvest and other manual tasks such as pruning and bottling. Erasmo's legacy lives on not only in their memories but also in their wines.
Their daily decisions are guided by a deep respect for the vines, the land, and nature. Their goal remains to produce wines rich in personality, reflective of their territory, sincere, and uncompromising on quality.
