San Clemente Listan Negro, Tintilla 2019 – Volcanic minerality meets Atlantic freshness

Leave mainland Europe and discover a red wine that springs directly from the smoky heart of the Atlantic: The San Clemente Listan Negro y Tintilla 2019 is a fascinating natural wine monument from the volcanic slopes of Tenerife. In the Canary Islands, the vines grow on deep black, mineral-rich volcanic soils and are exposed to the constant, cooling trade winds from the sea. Bodega San Clemente captures this extreme, almost dramatic terroir in a masterful cuvée – untamed, full of character, and brimming with vibrant energy.

Indigenous Treasures: Listán Negro & Tintilla in Harmony:

The backbone of this wine consists of two extremely exciting, indigenous grape varieties from the islands. The main grape variety, Listán Negro, brings the unmistakable peppery spice, bright, juicy fruit, and typical volcanic smokiness to the blend. It is complemented by the rare Tintilla variety (often also known as Tintilla de Rota), which lends the wine a deeper color, ripe berry fruit, and a finely structured, stable tannin framework. Together they form a harmonious duo that strikes the perfect balance between concentrated power and refreshing lightness.

Smoky, elegant, and profound: The character of the San Clemente 2019

The 2019 vintage matured gently in the cellar after careful hand-harvesting and spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts. To avoid masking the pure identity of the lava soil with new oak, the winery employs a cautious approach to aging. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unadulterated.

  • On the nose: An absolutely fascinating, wonderfully unconventional bouquet. Aromas of wild blackberries, dark forest cherries, and dried cranberries dominate, spectacularly interwoven with notes of black pepper, ash, cold smoke, and a salty sea breeze. On the palate: Surprisingly elegant, taut, and with an invigorating, mineral grip. The juicy red and dark fruit dances perfectly with the lively, Atlantic acidity. The tannins are finely polished and present, giving the concentrated body tremendous muscle and structure on the black lava soil without making it seem heavy.

  • The finish: Incredibly long, dry, and deeply smoky. A salty-mineral aftertaste lingers on the tongue, reminding you with every sip of the Atlantic sea spray and the volcanic origin.

  • Food Pairing & Serving Suggestion

Such a mineral and characterful red wine truly blossoms when paired with the right cuisine. It is the perfect companion to aromatic meat dishes: It harmonizes fantastically with grilled beef (bistecca), braised lamb, spicy salsiccia, or traditional Canarian meat dishes (such as conejo al salmorejo). It is also a true delight with intensely spiced grilled vegetables, tapas, or long-aged goat cheese.

Tip from oneder.wine: The volcanic minerality and the Listán Negro grape variety need some time after uncorking to fully open up. Give the San Clemente Listan Negro, Tintilla 2019 an hour to decant. At an optimal serving temperature of 15–16 °C (preferably a touch cooler than classic, full-bodied red wines), it reveals its full, fascinating character.
