Las Panzudas 2023, Hodgkinson, Priorat – Pure, unvarnished Garnacha from the amphora

Forget heavy, oak-laden wines: Las Panzudas 2023, Hodgkinson, Priorat brings a fascinating, almost revolutionary freshness to Catalonia's most famous wine region. On their historic estate, Mas del Habanero, the three Hodgkinson brothers vinify uncompromising natural wines with minimal intervention. The Las Panzudas 2023 is the best proof of how lively, juicy, and unvarnished pure, origin-driven wine can taste.

Incidentally, the wine owes its charming name ("The Pot-Bellied Ones") to its cradle: it is aged exclusively in round, pot-bellied clay amphorae.

The Garnacha Grape Variety: Elegant, juicy, and full of energy

Priorat's most important grape variety shows its untamed side in the Las Panzudas 2023, Hodgkinson, Priorat. This 100% single-varietal Garnacha (known as Grenache in France) comes from organically farmed vineyards.

On the region's legendary slate soils (Llicorella), Garnacha usually develops massive power – but Hodgkinson captures the cooling afternoon Mediterranean breeze perfectly. The result is a style that celebrates the characteristic, bright red fruit of Garnacha without hiding it behind heavy barrique oak.

Terroir in the Glass: The character of Las Panzudas 2023

Because the Las Panzudas 2023, Hodgkinson, Priorat is completely unfiltered and spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts in amphorae without any additives, it retains its vibrant, elemental nature. The clay allows the wine to breathe, but unlike an oak barrel, it does not impart any foreign flavors.

  • On the nose: A wonderfully clear, inviting bouquet. Fresh raspberries, ripe wild strawberries, and juicy cherries practically leap out of the glass, beautifully underpinned by Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary, as well as a fine, stony minerality.

  • On the palate: Extremely juicy, incredibly gluggable, and tremendously vital. The fruit is present yet feels feather-light, carried by a crisp, lively acidity. The tannins are noticeable, but wonderfully smooth and velvety. There is no heavy burden here; everything simply flows.

  • The finish: Surprisingly long, fresh, and with a fine grip that immediately makes you crave the next sip.

Food Pairing & Recommendation

The Las Panzudas 2023, Hodgkinson, Priorat shatters the cliché that Priorat wines must be heavy companions to food. It is incredibly versatile: it shines solo as a sophisticated evening wine, but also pairs perfectly with grilled Mediterranean vegetables, rustic sourdough bread with Sobrasada or 'Nduja, hearty pasta with wild boar ragout, or juicy chicken roasted with herbs.

Tip from oneder.wine: Since this natural wine is unfiltered and full of life, it benefits from a bit of air after opening. For maximum drinkability, feel free to serve it slightly chilled at around 14–16 °C. An absolute favorite for anyone wanting to rediscover Priorat!
