Forget everything you know about classic white wine: The Amber 2020 from Matiashvili's Marani is a fascinating journey back to the origins of winemaking. In Georgia, the oldest wine region in the world, wine has been produced in the traditional way for over 8,000 years. The small family-run Matiashvili winery in the east of the country (Kakheti region) works in a completely purist manner, bottling the untamed power of the Georgian soil. A deep amber-colored natural wine full of character, complexity, and captivating energy.
The secret behind the deep color and exceptional structure of the Amber 2020 is the traditional fermentation in the Qvevri (a giant clay vessel buried in the ground). In this artisanal master technique, the white grapes are not simply pressed. Instead, the juice ferments together with the grape skins, seeds, and often the stems for several months deep in the cool earth. This extended skin contact (maceration) allows the wine to extract fascinating tannins, a profound structure, and its namesake, luminous amber color (Amber).
For this traditional cuvée, Matiashvili uses autochthonous (native) Georgian grape varieties that are perfectly adapted to the hot climate of Kakheti. The wine is neither fined nor filtered and contains absolutely no additives in order to preserve its pure, archaic identity.
On the nose: An incredibly complex, deep bouquet. It enchants with intense aromas of dried apricots, orange peel, ripe quince, and dried herbs, masterfully underpinned by complex notes of walnuts, beeswax, and a hint of fine tobacco.
On the palate: Powerful, full of character, and with a fascinating, almost red wine-like structure. The Amber 2020 from Matiashvili's Marani displays a gripping, ripe tannin structure, perfectly supported by a balanced, ripe acidity. The body is dense, dry, and completely coats the mouth with a spicy-fruity depth.
The finish: An incredibly long, warm, and almost aristocratic finish that lingers for minutes with a delicate nuttiness and a vibrant, earthy minerality.
A wine this structured and powerful demands equally characterful food. It is the perfect accompaniment to rich, spicy dishes: It harmonizes fantastically with grilled pork or lamb, hearty stews with chickpeas and herbs, roasted poultry (such as duck or goose), or traditional Georgian dumplings (khinkali). It is also an absolute delight with mature, intense mountain cheese or spicy tapas.
Tip from oneder.wine: A traditional Qvevri wine is a living work of art and absolutely needs air after opening to tell its whole story. Allow the Amber 2020 from Matiashvili's Marani one to two hours in a large decanter. Please do not drink it too cold – at an optimal temperature of 12–14 °C (like a light red wine), it unfolds its majestic splendor best.
