White wines with skin contact – often called Orange Wines, Amber Wines or simply "on skins". For us, they are the true diamond of unconventional viticulture: where identity is created, where a signature becomes visible, and where winemakers show their very own style.
These wines stand for complexity, a pleasant unpredictability, fine tannins and often a softer acidity. Apart from their colour – an unmistakable sign – they embody exactly what we appreciate about skin-fermented white wines.
The three wines in this set impressively show what Orange Wine is made of: grape variety, terroir and the winemaker's style combine to form a whole – a work that we call wine.
Untitled 2023 – Villa Job Friuli, Italy The name itself is a conscious statement beyond classical conventions. Alessandro Job is convinced: The most primitive thing that could happen to such an exciting wine as Tokaj was its renaming to Tokajer Friulano, after the original name has been protected as a geographical origin since 2007.
No, says Alessandro – that makes no sense. So: welcome Untitled.
Friulano, 14 days fermented on the skins in an open barrel, then aged in concrete, old barriques and tonneaux. Prego – a wine with clear attitude and its own character.
Ripe fruit meets herbs, fresh on the palate, with a soft, harmonious acidity in the finish.
A true masterpiece by one of the formative winemakers of unconventional viticulture in Alsace.
Selected grapes of this aromatic classic macerate on the skins for about 20 days, which gives the wine its intense garnet colour. It then matures for about ten months in large wooden barrels.
In the glass, a complex bouquet of roses and delicate honey notes unfolds. On the palate, it is complex, from ripe red fruit to a precise, lively acidity in the finish. To conclude our set: Georgia. Hardly any other country has helped white wines on the skins achieve their current significance. The history of Georgian wine is rich and deep – we will come back to that.
The winemaker Beka Jimsheladze returned to his home village in Kakheti in 2015 and revitalized the family winery. His wines combine the region's millennia-old heritage with a modern, very personal approach.
But now to the wine: Kisi, one of the most important indigenous grape varieties of Kakheti. It combines freshness, which is often missing in Rkatsiteli, and ripeness, which Mtsvane does not always bring.
The vinification takes place classically in Qvevri: four months on skins, followed by another seven months of aging in the same amphora buried in the ground.
Dark yellow to amber, dried fruit and apricot on the nose, powerful, complex on the palate, with noticeable tannins and a long, structured finish.
An excellent companion to grilled or smoked fish as well as to meat dishes in many variations.
As different as these three wines are, they tell a common story – of origin, attitude and time.
